The First Teaser for ‘Toy Story 4’ Is Here
Can it follow the trilogy’s perfect ending?
Toy Story 4 is a tricky proposition. No matter how it’s pitched, the movie has to get over the fact that it’s the sequel to a movie that didn’t seem to need a sequel, because it ended perfectly. One of the charming things about the Toy Story trilogy was that, despite the movies’ sporadic releases (four years between the first and second, eleven between the second and third), they took care to grow up with the audience that was there for the first one, who were entering adulthood as Toy Story 3 premiered, telling a story explicitly about looking back on the stuff that brought you joy as a kid—and how you have to move on from that.
That’s an ending that’s kind of hard to walk back, you know? So yeah, Toy Story 4 is an inherently weird movie with the odds stacked against it, and the teaser that Disney just released doesn’t really do much to orient you.
It’s mostly a group shot of all the toy-pals from the previous movies, holding hands and having a jolly old time—until this weird sentient fork dude shows up and messes everything up. It’s bizarre! But it’s also a teaser, and I suppose we are sufficiently teased. Want to know what it all means? Too bad, because this movie isn’t out until next summer.
Come to think of it, there are probably a bunch of kids who saw the first Toy Story who will have kids of their own when Toy Story 4 drops. Life—and Toy Story movies—truly do come at you fast.
